The man said that freeing barnacles from a bulkhead is like scattering corn to attract deer. ![]() Sheepshead not only taste good but have the stamina and aggression of a powerful sport fish. When he caught a nice sheepshead, I had my answer. I planned to watch for a while before asking what he was doing. I think I first spotted him at Fisherman’s Wharf.Īfter scraping a stretch of bulkhead, he would put down his hoe and pick up his fishing rod. Years ago, I learned this from an old angler who was using a hoe to scrape barnacles off of bulkheads. Because this toothy fish, with dentures that resemble sheep’s teeth, is well equipped to feed on barnacles and other crunchy critters that live on and near rocks. Thankfully, Port Aransas has an abundance of sheepshead habitat, namely the north and south jetties. This leaves sheepshead for the holidays, when larger spawners are more concentrated along the rocks near deep water. Ironically, these two hard-to-hook species also are among the tastiest table fare the Coastal Bend has to offer.īut mangrove snapper, a tropical species, is hardly available to winter anglers here. Nearby, on that list, would be the gray snapper, which most of us know as mangrove snapper.
